The Room-by-Room Deep-Clean Checklist

Tackling a deep clean? Work room by room with this checklist and nothing gets missed. Print it, share it with your household — or hand it to your pro so you're both on the same page.

Before you start

  • Gather your supplies first: all-purpose cleaner, bathroom cleaner, glass cleaner, microfiber cloths, a vacuum, and a mop.
  • Work top to bottom and back to front in every room, so dust and drips fall onto areas you haven't cleaned yet.
  • Safety basics: never mix bleach with vinegar or acids, spot-test new products in a hidden spot, and skip vinegar on natural stone.

Kitchen

  • Clean inside the microwave; degrease the stovetop and range hood.
  • Wipe cabinet fronts and handles; clean inside one appliance (rotate each deep clean).
  • Scrub the sink and faucet; polish stainless steel.
  • Mop the floor, including under reachable edges.

Bathrooms

  • Scrub toilets, tubs, and showers, including grout lines.
  • Descale faucets and showerheads; polish mirrors.
  • Wipe vanities, cabinets, and light switches.
  • Wash bath mats; mop the floor.

Bedrooms

  • Dust ceiling fans, shelves, and baseboards.
  • Vacuum under the bed and behind furniture where reachable.
  • Wash bedding, including the mattress protector; flip or rotate the mattress if due.
  • Clean mirrors and interior windows.

Living areas

  • Dust blinds, window sills, and electronics.
  • Vacuum upholstery and under cushions; mop or vacuum floors.
  • Wipe remotes, switches, and door handles.
  • Polish wood furniture.

Laundry & utility spaces

  • Wipe the washer and dryer exteriors; clean the lint trap housing.
  • Mop the floor; dust shelves and storage areas.
  • Check HVAC vent covers for dust buildup where accessible.

The finishing touches (whole home)

  • Empty all trash cans and wipe them out.
  • Open windows to air the home out.
  • Do a final walkthrough with fresh eyes — or better, someone else's.

How long does a deep clean take?

It depends on the home — size matters, but condition matters more. A well-kept home of any size goes faster than a neglected one, and an extra pair of hands changes the math entirely. Plan room by room using the checklist above, and give yourself more time than you think you'll need for the first pass.
